America, country of Privileges

It was a day at the Social Security Number office at Fresno California – Social security number which you need to get a job, collect social security benefits and receive some other government services.

I was enlightened about the social security number and the Necessity of it with the help of my friend’s passable knowledge who was there to apply for it. It gave me an eloquent comprehension on how people in US need this social standing and for what all benefits.

I was sitting quietly at the “quite please” area where nobody is entitled to speak in loud voice. My friend’s ticket number was called up on and he moved to the window, where he was supposed to be counseled in order to have the number.

Sitting next to me was a mother with her – presumably – ten year old daughter. The conversation between them – which was quite audible to me – let me haul to the fact that the daughter doesn’t want to be at the waiting hall applying for the social security number, rather spending her precious time at her friend’s place.

Mom was irritated and aghast by her daughter’s behavior for refusing to accompany her for an hour or so at the waiting hall.

What energized me more was the conversation between the two. It was hard to believe how the mother was trying her best level to pacify her daughter by ‘forcing’ her to sit quietly. By forcing her? Well not really – she was harsher but in a very urbane polite way and the daughter was reluctant to decipher anything.

But the mother was not using any harsh or irksome language towards her daughter. As the conversation moved on, I came to know that the mom was supposed to take ‘an appointment’ with her daughter before bringing her to the social security office.

Yes, you read it right mom was supposed to take an appointment with her daughter first before fixing time with the office. As the tête-à-tête reflected, her daughter had already fixed some pre-Christmas eve party with her friends, she was not informed ‘well in advance’ for this waiting shrug.

Daughter said to her mother: mom you didn’t took any appointment with me before fixing any time with the social security office. That’s not appreciable on your part. I am quite dismayed with this fact.

Mom replied: I am sorry baby that I was not able to speak to you in advance sine I was busy with my Christmas shopping. So please pardon me, next time onwards it won’t happen and be patient since the waiting procedure will be over soon.

Welcome to USA, to the people of USA- where everybody has their right to rule themselves. From a ten year old child to fifty year old granny - everybody has right to live their life on their own.

The country is so well-versed that each individual is protected in numerous contexts to maintain a happy and self independent life.

Born with the right, live with the right, die with the right – that’s what your social right is all about.

How much longer are we going to think it necessary to be ''American'' before (or in contradistinction to) being cultivated, being enlightened, being humane, and having the same intellectual discipline as other civilized countries?

America's greatest strength, and its greatest weakness, is our belief in second chances, our belief that we can always start over, that things can be made better everywhere – questions remain unanswered - when is the turn for India?

I have been in US for a couple of years now and I dnt see much of differences in our cultures. They are some what the same. But yes I really appreciate the Americans where they respect each individual with the same attitude where time is concerned.

Sir, For what's a blog linked to Mumbai's premier daily, your solecisms are astonishing. Please give your writing a "second chance". And, as for India being on par with the US, forget it. A country where citizens cannot treat each other as equals is never going to be on the same platform as the US.

India cannot be compared to America..
America was a country of priviledge ... now it isnt ? wake up guys !! what u all are saying... India has lot of problems buts its all due its population, its economy.... but EAch and every individual from a begger to a rich every one leaves a life to its fullest.. whwerin America people cant do that... If u all think America is country of priviledge, come and see the condition here after the economy has affected it... people are jobless.. have got nothing to do... so now started robberies... every country has there own problems but u can see them when they are affected with it... Idia would be 10 times better then America asfar as the present situation is concerned..

America WAS a country of priviledge....
The people who stay in india dont know the value of india... An the born american indian dont know what is india....We (India) are a populated country but sorry to say we dont belive in robberies and racism where as in America even indian are not treated as the same and i can say that because i worked in overseas a lot and difference can be seen sir..... And about the SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER . every country got there own rule and regulation and the comparision on that basis is a kind of madness infact foolishnes..And yes Mr ROHAN AND MISS KANCHAN...SORRY to say but we indian know more than a lot than americans about respect and yes why are you looking the negative stuffs of the country see the positive aspects tooo....i work in america at the moment and the economy affected this country very badly and ppl lost there jobs too... where as in india there are people lost the jobs but a lesser amount in comaprision to america...belive me guys it make a difference if you think positive and stop scolding your own country...We are inching day by day towards the superpower too so please support it....And yes we cant blame the goverment because we are the people who choose them so we are equaly responsible for the same...thanks....

ya right America sucks
Mukund and Tushar, Your hypocrisy is revealed in that you are extolling India and condescending America while sitting in a posh office in the US. "jis thali mein khaya usi mein thuka" As regards to the situation here being bad, the benchmark you use for comparsion are your fellow Americans. Try comparing the number of hours an average American puts in working and the amount he gets paid. And, please do me a favor. Leave my country and settle in India. There are lots of people waiting to come to the US. Look at the queue outside an American embassy. It is far longer than the ones at the local ration office! and learn something from our mythology. Hinduism teaches us to respect our country as a mother. The same also tells us how Krishna gave the same respect to both his biological mother and the mother who adopted him. America is your adopted land, learn to love it or get out!

Myths about America
There are lot of myths about america in india specifically regards to easy lifestyle, lot of rights, richness and those do get signficantly altered once you come here.Infact most indians even do not even know about racism. To gain importance NRIs from US when they are in india or talking on phone hype up the positives here and do not talk or tone down the negatives. America is culturally way behind and is still relatively young and immature country although they are good at learning things and are catching up with the rest of the world. it would probably take them another 100 to 150 years before they catch up to a certain extent.
